Giles Smith, of Wyandotte, was sentenced to the penitentiary for seven years for stealing a box of herring and a bottle of gin from a railroad car.  That shows how awful wrong it is to steal from a railroad company.  We think the penalty was a lenient one, for since the railroads are entirely running our State we do not see why the man wasn’t hung.  The Atchison Daily Patriot, Atchison, Kansas.  Friday, October 25, 1872.  Page 4.  © Transcribed by Darren McMannis for the Kansas Council of Genealogical Societies, Inc.
