Amos M. Spencer, a relative of Mrs. Judge Ruggles, who lived on her farm, was drowned Sunday while bathing in the Neosho river near his home. It seems that directly below the Ruggles ford there is a deep hole into which the unfortunate man stepped while wading about in the water, and before his cries could bring any one to his aid he had gone down for the third time, and when his body was taken out of the water life was extinct. The deceased was 24 years of age, and a most estimable young man. His funeral took place Monday. The Emporia Weekly News, Emporia, Kansas. July 14, 1881. Page 3.
