During a storm in Sedgwick county on the 17th, Johnny Lane, 12 years old, was herding his father’s cattle, 12 miles from Wichita, and took refuge in a ravine. Strange to say, a stroke of lightning struck him and his pony dead. Their bodies were not found until the next day. The Emporia News, Emporia, Kansas. August 1, 1873.
