The Kirwin Chief says:  “Notwithstanding the heavy loss of cattle in Southern Kansas this winter through exposure and scarcity of feed there has not been a single case of death among the herds in this county from the same causes, this winter.  Mr. Wheeler who has wintered 3,000 head of Texas cattle over in Rooks County, without feed except just what the cattle secured by grazing, has lost but 60 head out of 3,000.  There has been an abundance of feed in this county all winter and the grass is now so well up that feeding is no longer necessary.”  The Atchison Daily Champion, Atchison, Kansas.  Friday, May 22, 1874.  Page 4.  © Transcribed by Darren McMannis for the Kansas Council of Genealogical Societies, Inc.
